Abstract

The article examines demographic aspects of British student performance studies. The Department for Education and Skills carried out an equalities review and determined that when factors such as poverty and mother's education are included in reviews of students' academic achievement, the influence of race becomes diminishes. Professor Edward Melhuish, who participated in the review, says government funds should target deprivation regardless of race.
