Abstract

The article presents an overview of the ways HIV infection should be handled in pregnant women in order to reduce the risk the disease's transmission to newborns. A discussion of factors which affect mother to child transmission of HIV and of the ways pregnancy affects the progression of HIV is presented. The effects HIV virus infections can have on pregnancy and the outcomes of pregnancy are discussed. Guidelines for the clinical management of labour and delivery of children from HIV-positive women that have been issued by the British HIV Association are examined.
