Abstract
- The article discusses the development and implementation of the Finnish Baltic Sea Research Programme (BIREME). The goals of the program were to control eutrophication and harmful substances and maintain biodiversity and sustainable use of marine resources in the Baltic Sea. Specifically the research focused on changes in the Baltic Sea and its drainage basin; interactions between the land, coast, air, and open sea; and societal and environmental interactions in the region. Projects funded included analysis of ecological processes in littoral habitats and the influence on coastal ecosystems of management schemes and protection measures.
