Abstract

The article discusses methods of interpreting the historical significance of photographs. The author suggests the identity and motives of the photographer are integral in analyzing a photograph's historical value. Landscape photography was used to chart territories of the North American West. The author suggests photographs of Indian life were intended to depict the state's power over Indians. Photographer Frederick Dally took portraits of North American Indians while touring tribal villages.
