Abstract

Cancer incidence and mortality in African countries is increasing, and chronic infections are playing the key role in the increase in malignancies. The vectors for malaria and schistosomiasis, as well as mycotoxins produced by fungi that contaminate food, are also causative factors. Other factors can increase the risk of cancer, such as exposure to pollutants in the workplace and environment. Atmospheric and indoor pollutants stemming from an increase in vehicular traffic, the use of biofuels, fumes from artisan workshops, industrial and agricultural pollution, and tobacco smoke are additional factors that could elevate the risk of cancer in Africa in the near future. It is becoming urgent to investigate these environmental factors and their impact on the oncogenesis process in order to develop cancer prevention policies and recommendations for the African continent.
