Abstract
- This article examines efforts by the American Federation of Teachers to address the academic staffing crisis in American universities and colleges. The group is mounting a legislative and lobbying effort called the Faculty and College Excellence campaign. In 2007 only 30 percent of professors in America work full time, on the tenure track or with tenure. The union is asking legislators in each state to commit money to establish a different staffing ratio of three full-time, tenure track professors for every part-time professor. The union is also asking state lawmakers to appropriate money to raise the pay of part-timers until it is equal, course for course, to that of full-timers.
