Abstract

The article discusses the contents of the municipal libraries of France. The author states that town libraries in France contain more valuable and rare books than universities because of the confiscation of books from religious houses during the French Revolution. The confiscated books were to be distributed around the country to create a national library. The Bibliothèques Municipales have embraced new media and renovated stock but maintain collections or rare books.
