Abstract

Cutaneous drug reactions (cADRs) are the most frequent adverse drug reactions with important consequences in morbidity, mortality and hospital costs. In recent years, pharmacogenetics has allowed recognition of important markers of genetic susceptibility to the development of adverse drug reactions; in dermatology, it has shown significant associations between cADRs and genes involved in metabolic pathways and drug detoxification as well as with the major histocompatibility complex, regulator of immune responses. Pharmacogenetics has also led to the support, and refusal, of basic notions in the physiopathogenics of cADRs. Knowledge regarding the differences among pharmacogenetics and pharmacoethnias may alert physicians for adequate therapeutic options, their dosage, or the need for rigorous monitoring; it is feasible in the near future to envisage having a personal registry of the genetic profile that could be consulted previous to drug prescription.
