Abstract

The article reports on plans to build a hydroelectric dam on the Mekong River in the Siphandon, or 4,000 Islands, district of Laos, and the threat it poses to wildlife. As an underdeveloped country, Laos is eager to develop its water resources and sell electricity to its neighbors, but environmentalists say the project threatens a crucial waterway for migratory fish and the livelihoods of local residents.
