Abstract

The article reports that the U.S. Congress and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are exploring options for the permanent storage of mercury. The U.S. is facing international pressure to ban exports of mercury. Thousands of tons of mercury are being used by eight U.S. chemical plants that will eventually shut down, and the mercury at these sites will be recovered. EPA is also exploring possible storage options for private-sector mercury.
