Abstract

The article examines the repeated claims by U.S. President George W. Bush that the Iraq War is a struggle against the terrorist organization al-Qaeda, and that they are the same forces who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001. Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the Sunni extremist group in Iraq, did not exist until after the war began in 2003 and is one of the many factions at war in that country. Critics charge Bush is deceiving to maintain U.S. support for the war.
