Abstract

The article reports that the most likely British students to get stuck in a rut of low academic achievement are white boys and girls. According to a study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, almost 50 percent of England's low achievers are white boys and approximately 16 percent are white girls. The authors note that poor reading and writing at the primary level contributes to underachievement in later years, and low expectations could exacerbate the problem.
