Abstract

The article discusses the great chance that a major seismic activity would produce a catastrophic failure of multiple levees around Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta in California. It is stated that the delta is laced with more than 1700 kilometers of earthen levees wherein many lies in a major flood or quake fault. According to Jeffrey Mount, a geologist at the University of California in Davis, the system of delta levees are in worse shape. In 2005, he denotes that for the next 50 years a combination of seismic action and increased flooding due to climate change would devastate the area.
