Abstract

The article discusses the ethnic and ethno-political situation in the Republic of Buryatia. Once a former Soviet state, Buryatia was more integrated compared to other regions in Russia where different ethnicities came into conflict after declaring their independence. The article argues that Russian President Vladimir Putin's solution of recentralizating power among the states to end ethnic divisions is not effective for long-term peace. Through the use of surveys, the article examines what separates Buryatia, a calm region with little political and ethnic conflicts, from less integrated states.
