Abstract
- The article discusses the relationship between then General George Washington fighting against British rule in the American Revolution and the Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette was at first an unwelcome burden to Washington but soon the two men were often together because, as some scholars, allege a father-son bond formed between the two of them, however this conclusion is doubtful. The differences in personality, history, and social standing between Lafayette and Washington make theirs seem an unlikely friendship but both men were "aristocrats in a monarchy." The French Revolution led Lafayette to agree with Washington that revolutions cannot be forced on a country.
