Abstract

The article presents a summary of a dissertation that focuses on evidence from the Greek language that supports the role of segmental sandhi in the parsing of speech. The dissertation examines the relationship between prosodic and syntactic structure and segmental allophonic processes at the edges of words in Greek. It investigates the exact phonetic nature of segmental sandhi and tries to understand whether such processes result in deterministically categorical segmental changes or in probalistic and continuous variation. The processing of structurally ambiguous sentences is examined. The article tries to determine whether there is a relationship between the various outcomes of segmental sandhi and particular morphosyntactic structures.
