Abstract: The article examines an unusual social controversy in Malibu, the beach resort suburb of Los Angeles, California. The community of 13,000 now has 26 licensed drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers catering to the affluent. Traffic problems have led some residents to call for a ban on issuing further licenses. The incredible price of real estate in Malibu is expected to stall further rehab center expansion.
