Abstract

The article focuses on an increase in the use of a money laundering technique known as microstructuring being seen in the U.S. in 2007. The technique involves the use of ATM machines by drug dealers, organized crime, and terrorists who place cash into accounts which are not their own which later gets transferred to confederates in other locations. The case of Luis Saavedra and Carlos Roca, who allegedly laundered money for a Colombian drug trafficking organization, is discussed as an example.
