2006 American Political Science Association ProposalGender Bias Discrimination and the Violation of Women in ChinaDivision 45: Human RightsThere exist many organizations that promote the protection of human rights bringing attention extreme abuses of power in countries that allow for violations against their citizens. To some extent organizations that support global human rights efforts are the only outlet for those suffer from various types of violations and abuse. Human rights violations against women further divide the gender gap and support the separate spheres between men and women.The government in China has continued to move forward with their one child policy enforcing that policy by means which violate the basic human rights of women. This is not an issue of birth control or reproductive overpopulation but an issue of violence and torture against women. From forced abortion, sterilization, kidnappings, beatings, coercion, and confinement the women in China fall under the abusive power of the government without recourse or justice. They are accountable to the law that is a violation of their human rights.This paper will explore human rights as a concept defined and measured, China's one child policy, the government's involvement in the enforcement of the policy, the actors that physically enforce the policy, the women that are violated, and organizations that help the women or ignore the issue. The research explored in this paper will contribute to the field of human rights within the realm of the study of political science by further exposing violations and the responses to the crisis in China, and the difficulties defining and measuring human rights data. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
