Abstract

Drawing on the same three underlying exogenous variables that Tocqueville identified in Democracy in America to explain the process of democratization that was occurring in the U.S. that he observed, colleagues associated with the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University have developed over more than two decades a framework for analyzing political systems, Underlying all structured interactions are basic bio-physical condition, the attributes of a community, and the rules that affect the actions and outcomes that are available to individuals. The Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework will be briefly explicated in this paper and many of its applications to the study of self-governance in the U.S. and in developing countries will be described. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
