Abstract
- The article reports on the use of fire in harvesting sugarcane in São Paolo, Brazil. It says that the federal government wants to stop the practice and mechanical harvesters will take over which may take farmers out of the field and lead to a social conflict. Accordingly, the crop-burning processes draw off a layer of black ash into the air, producing an eye-burning pollution.
