The Party's Over: Citizen Disenchantment in Mexico's Emerging Democracy.

Mexicans' rapid, deep disenchantment with their democracy is puzzling. Normally, the "reservoir of good will" that newly democratized regimes enjoy enables them to overcome performance deficits. This paper marshalls evidence from an original survey, Desencanto Ciudadano en México, to argue that part of the reason for the quick disillusionment is a prevalent "substantive" conception of democracy emphasizing socioeconomic improvement and equality, combined with poor government performance in precisely those areas. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
