Abstract

The article reports on the use of magnesium alloys by automotive designers to replace aluminum, zinc and other materials in structural automotive parts. Automotive designers use magnesium alloys because they are much lighter than aluminum and just about a quarter the weight of zinc. They also have excellent ductility and rapid solidification which can cut cycle times in half. Details on diecasting magnesium alloys are discussed.
