Abstract

The author reflects on how librarians can make a difference in students' success on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). She argues that analysis on explicit instruction has proven to increase higher level thinking skills with students in grader 4 and up. She suggests that student can be encouraged to grow in the Understanding learning style by participating in exercises that are challenging and analytical. An analysis on several factors affecting student performance is offered.
