Abstract

The article discusses problems faced by European banks. The cost of short-term capital has risen substantially since January, 2007. Banks have become reluctant to lend to each other as they stockpile cash against possible future distress caused by mortgage-backed securities. The European Central Bank has sought to ameliorate the situation by injecting cash into the system.
