Abstract

This article reports on the findings of a report that said an outbreak of poliomyelitis in northern Nigeria was caused by a mutated strain of the live polio vaccine. The outbreak happened in 2006 and caused 69 confirmed cases of paralysis. The report notes that vaccine-related polio is rare but says low vaccination rates in an area make it possible for the mutation to spread throughout the population. Nigeria stopped immunizing for polio in 2003 when rumors were spread that the vaccine would cause sterility or AIDS. By 2005 15 to 50 percent of children under the age of 5 years had not been treated.
