Abstract

The article reports on the protests due to the stabbing of labor leader Huang Qingnan in China that reflect the growing tension on the widening gap between the rich and the poor amidst a looming new labor law that will take effect on January 1, 2008. The law which according to the article, is the most significant overhaul of workplace regulation in a decade, contains provisions that include granting permanent status to some workers. Huang offers counseling including advising laid off workers on how to seek fair compensation from employers.
