Abstract

The article reports on the promulgated significant new use rules (SNUR), which focus on the use of chemicals for other applications, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It states that the rule is under Section 5(a)(2) of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and addresses 38 chemical substances which are the focus of pre-manufacture notices. The EPA stresses that the rule requires companies to inform the agency 90 days on the use of such chemicals before carrying out the activity. It is expected that the move will help the agency to effectively evaluate the environmental risks which may develop during the process.
