Abstract

The author reports on the Comic Book Project, a program which engages children in reading by using comic books. A description of how the program gets students involved with reading is given. The program, which started as a pilot program in New York City, is being used by more than 800 schools across the United States as of 2007. The founder of the program, Michael Bitz, feels that the visual tool which is offered by comic books is a powerful tool for children.
