Abstract
- The article focuses on the Old English phrase "ealond utan" and its use in the epic poem "Beowulf." It discusses various translations of the phrase which the author suggests are inexact. The author proposes that the phrase itself may be in error and not part of the original text of the epic. He offers the alternative phrase "innan ond utan," which is a phrase that recurs in "Beowulf," and suggests the error may have been due to the mistake of an early scribe.
