Abstract

The paper presents the results of an analysis of the space variability of water electric conductuvity C of a cluster of 15 lakes located in the northern part of the Lakaja River catchment (Lake Stirniai sub-catchment). The size of the chosen lakes varies within 2.9 and 819 hc. The hydrophysical survey of the lakes on 14 August 2007 was carried out and surface water electric conductivity was measured in situ. The data showed a considerable space variability forming a very wide range from 14 to 310 μS cm-1. The lowest C values were noted in closed lakes (two lakes, the mean value of C is 20 μS cm-1) in which alimentation is determined by direct atmospheric precipitation. The most numerous, represented by as many as 9 lakes, are the water bodies with the C between 240-310 μS cm-1 which have a perennial surface outflow. The C values of lakes with surface outflow during wet decades or seasons only take an intermediate position between the above-mentioned extremes. So it was established that the C values differentiate according to surface outflow regularity. The latter depends on the underground alimentation which increases in lower sections of a hydrographic system. This is why a statistically important relationship (the coefficient of correlation R = 0.79) between the C and water stage of the lake has been established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
