Abstract

The article relates the authors' perspective concerning the use of peritoneal membrane for long-term dialysis. The authors contend that the expansion of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is limited by the incapacity of the peritoneal membrane to perform the needed solute and water transport in the long term. They argue that the functional consequence of this capacity limitation is ultrafiltration failure related to the damage induced by PD fluids and peritonitis.
