Abstract

The article focuses on Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank. Trichet has not cut interest rates in response to the financial turmoil created by the U.S. credit crisis, unlike his American counterpart, Federal Reserve Board chairman Ben Bernanke. Trichet is seen as a decisive leader who is focused on the need to fight inflation. Some economists state this focus may need to change if the U.S. goes into recession, threatening Europe's economy.
