Abstract

The article discusses how mentoring school principals could increase induction. The system that the author envisions is similar to that used by student teachers who work in the classrooms of master teachers. The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) developed standards for skills that principals should have and began the Principals Advisory Leadership Services (PALS) Corps to aid administrators. It is noted that problems like confusing roles, time, mismatching of mentors and novices, and a lack of goals can prevent mentors from being useful. Statistics from the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics show that the there is a shortage of school principals.
