Abstract

The article comments on the debate over R.J. Reynold Tobacco Company's supposedly lower-risk Eclipse cigarette brand. The emphasis of the anti-smoking movement on quitting smoking as well as the difficulty of quitting smoking are discussed. The implication of the plan of R.J. Reynold Tobacco Co. to test lower-risk claims for Eclipse for the tobacco industry is assessed. Such products could still generate profits for tobacco companies from the millions of U.S. citizens who are unable or unwilling to quit smoking.
