Abstract
- The article discusses nationalism and national identity in Belarus, especially the concept of "tuteishasc," or "localness," as a way the people of Belarus define themselves in relation to other nations and nationalities. In particular, the article examines the way "tuteishasc" was used from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries as a form of Belarusian "cultural resistance," creating a particular kind of national identity that allowed for a degree of social mobility independent of the shifting political regimes.
