Abstract: The article focuses on the problems posed for the management of major banks by persistent rumors in financial markets that some of them face severe liquidity and solvency issues. The stock price of the British mortgage loan firm HBOS PLC fluctuated wildly in response to rumors about a cash shortage which were denied officially by the Bank of England.
