Abstract

The article reports that U.S. stock prices rose dramatically on reports that two major financial services companies had acquired new sources of capital. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 3.2 percent. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. said investors were prepared to give it more capital. The Swiss bank UBS AG announced the sale of $15 billion in preferred stock. The company's stock rose 15 percent despite the fact it also announced $19 billion in losses created by the credit crisis.
