Abstract
- The article discusses research on whether incentive systems can aid in the recruitment of teachers. Incentives such as bonuses, tuition reimbursement and housing aid have been implemented to attract teachers to positions in schools with low-income and challenged students. The author notes that poor schools are often staffed with inexperienced and ineffective teachers. A program assisting teachers with certification in Massachusetts failed to motivate teachers to remain at public schools. A bonus system implemented in North Carolina schools also failed to assist in the retention of teachers due to poor support systems. Research surveys suggest that school management, autonomy and teacher support are key factors in job satisfaction for teachers.
