Abstract

The author discusses several books related to politics in Kenya. He notes how the book "The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective," by Crawford Young, portrays colonialism in Africa and how the books "Collapsed States: The Disintegration and Restoration of Legitimate Authority," edited by I. William Zartman and "Human Rights, the Rule of Law, and Development in Africa," by Paul Tiyambe Zeleza and Philip J. McConnaughay illustrate democratization in Africa following the end of the cold war. He discusses violence related to the disputed 2008 Kenyan presidential election and how it led to an alliance between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
