Abstract

The article discusses the claim of Neo-Aristotelian virtue ethicists called the eudaimonist thesis. The claim stresses that there is a kind of deep and enduring happiness and it is impossible without virtue. The paper presents an advanced studies from empirical psychology to support the eudaimonist thesis that is interpreted as a psychological claim, and reconsider counterexamples that have been directed against the thesis interpreted as a conceptual assertion. It discusses that refocusing the debate in the way affords a fresh perspective on a familiar philosophical landscape, and provides eudaimonist virtue ethics with a source of empirical support for its moral psychology.
