Abstract
- The article reports on greater government openness and accountability sought by Chinese citizens after the May 12, 2008 earthquake. It notes that enabled by the Internet and domestic media, and fueled by an outpouring of emotions over the earthquake, citizens are asking pointed questions about the devastation. According to China, over 68,500 people had died and 19,350 were still missing as of May 29. Lin Qiang, an official responsible for schools in Sichuan, has admitted that corruption might have contributed to the collapse of schools.
