Abstract
- The article describes The Bayle, the gatehouse of the former Augustinian Priory at Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The license for the construction of the gatehouse was granted King Richard II in 1388. The Bayle was built to serve as a distinguished entrance to the monastic areas of the Priory, in anticipation of an increase in the number of pilgrims visiting the establishment when former Prior John de Thweng is canonized. The exterior of The Bayle is made of freestone, though the west face has been partly rebuilt in brick during the seventeenth century.
