Abstract

The article offers information on the Grove Priory and the Royal Manor of Leighton in Bedfordshire, England, which was visited by the delegates to the Summer Meeting of the Royal Archaeological Institute held at Bedford on July 13, 1982. The Grove Priory was one of the six alien priories of the Benedictine Order of Fontevrault in Anjou founded in 1164 on the gift of the royal manor of Leighton. The manor was granted by Edward I to his daughter Mary of Woodstock in 1305. During the French wars, the manor was confiscated and in 1361 it was regained by Fontevrault. The Grove Priory was owned successively by the Dukes of Suffolk, Eton College and Windsor College in the 15th-ventury. The Grove was separated from the manor when it was granted by Edward IV to his mother Cecily Neville in 1480.
