Abstract

The article explores on the origin of the name of Operation Vittles, the Allied airlift of Berlin, Germany after World War II. Details are given outlining the history of the airlift and its accomplishments. Discussion is offered regarding the command of the operation under U.S. Brigadier General Joseph Smith. Accounts are given noting the documentation asserting that Smith suggested the name of the operation due to the primary cargo consisting of food supplies. A further review of alternative theories regarding the operation's name is also provided.
