Abstract

The article discusses how the 2008 global recession is an opportunity to transform the energy, transportation, and business industry through environmental action. Topics include the three ways in which the media is impacting the green choices of consumers such as the suggestion that green choices are unaffordable, that consumers are not interested in environmental issues, and that the public views the environment as a luxury issue. Also discussed are the changes in British and U.S. consumer behavior, such as shopping locally, driving less, and an increase in hybrid automobile sales. Actions that the government, led by strong political leadership, can take to help people get through hard economic times is also presented.
