The proposal of Arnold Gehlen has been categorized as "anthropobiology". The current article describes the continuity established by Gehlen between the biology of the human being and such specifically human dimensions as technology and culture. This continuity is revealed, from a negative point of view, in the biological precariousness of the human body; from a positive point of view, in the opening to the world via action. With his or her activity, the human being compensates for physical deficiency through the construction of the world in the format of technological artifacts, institutions and ethical systems. Finally, this article will critically examine the reach and limits of Gehlen's proposal, primarily concerning the unity of the human person, the understanding of action and the idea of an "achieved life".
