Abstract

Mayor Ron Dellums of Oakland said he had asked the state attorney general to investigate accusations about his police department's handling of the August 2007 killing of Chauncey Bailey, a prominent local journalist. Mr. Dellums's actions came after a series of articles by the Chauncey Bailey Project, a collective of investigative journalists, drew connections between an Oakland police detective and Yusef Bey IV, who is accused of running a criminal enterprise out of a Muslim bakery. One member of the bakery, Devaughndre Broussard, has been charged with murder in the death of Mr. Bailey, the editor of The Oakland Post. The paper, a weekly with an emphasis on black politics and culture, had been investigating the finances of the bakery. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
