Abstract

The article examines the economic future of periodical and newspaper publishing. Both industries suffered large revenue declines in 2008, and companies including Conde Nast and Gannett have either closed periodicals, laid off large numbers of employees, or both. Prospects for many newspapers appear particularly grim, as Internet advertising revenue from Web sites cannot come close to replacing lost print advertising.
