Abstract

This paper argues that there is an urgent need to reframe the current climate change debate, not as a scientific assessment of the extent of human impact on nature, but as a 'perfect political dilemma' involving questions of human injustice and insecurity, the symptoms of which are: widening gaps between the poor and the rich; and a climate in crisis with high security risks. It concludes that in order for the climate debate to move beyond the current stalemate, the international community needs political leaders who understand science and who are willing to seek fair, equitable and just political solutions to a scientifically based challenge.
